The YMCA Camp Wiyaka Leader in Training program is a chance for 14-15 year old campers to step it up to the next level and prepare for their future roles at camp and in society.
While LIT campers may participate in some normal camp activities, much of their two week camp session is spent as a group doing leadership development programming. Our philosophy at Camp Wiyaka is that Leadership takes many forms and there are many different successful leadership attributes. As an LIT, your camper will spend a day with each program specialty and will learn from 7 different personalities, how to lead a program. At the end of the session your LIT camper will lead a program they developed under the supervision of the Head male and female counselors. They will get to have some fun too, as they will have access to some off-site trips and other advanced opportunities open to just the LIT campers.
The LIT program can give a solid foundation of leadership skills to those campers willing to put in the effort. Both the staff and the other campers will be looking to the LITs to be exemplary campers and this can be a lot of pressure. Completion of the LIT program does not guarantee a position on staff the following year, nor is it a required step in becoming a staff member. The program is designed to provide a general skill set which can be used as a member of any organization.
